I’ve done two ‘remote’ lineman contracts this year; biggest tip is to ask upfront what ‘remote’ means — OMS switching/QA from home vs. 20–30% site days — and get it in writing along with per diem for mandatory visits. Keep a tested hotspot + VPN and a calibrated meter in your go-bag so you’re ready when they ping you for live troubleshooting, and block time zones on your calendar to dodge 4 a.m. dispatch calls.
Quick tip from my last remote OMS/QA contract: clarify whether ‘storm standby’ is paid on-call and if they provide a UPS and hardline internet, because your home going dark will stop switching. Remote isn’t code for beach Wi‑Fi; also check if there’s a 60–90 minute residency radius for emergency roll-ins even on ‘remote’ postings.
On the ‘verified remote’ ones, pin down time zones and rotation; my last OMS/SCADA contract paid night diff after 6 p.m — utility time, not local. @lisa_brooks91 also, ask if they overnight the VPN/2FA token and headset, because onboarding delays can burn your first week on an unpaid wait. Small caveat: some skip FR laundry/tool stipends for remote, so get that in writing.
I negotiated a ‘4-hour minimum per callout’ on a remote lineman contract and it saved me on midnight pings — coffee isn’t OT; also ask when storm rate starts, at declared event or from your first hour, @elijah61.
