Duke Energy Union Workers Prepare for Work Stoppage
Union workers at Duke Energy are preparing for a potential work stoppage as contract negotiations have stalled. The International Brotherhood of Electric Workers Local 1393, representing nearly 1,000 Duke Energy workers in Indiana, has been negotiating since January for fair wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions. The union’s business manager, Christopher Wilson, noted unusual negotiation tactics, including Duke Energy canceling a session. With the current contract extension ending June 30, workers face operating without an agreement if a resolution isn’t reached.

PJM Issues Hot Weather & Maximum Generation Alerts
PJM, the grid operator for 13 states and D.C., issued Hot Weather and Maximum Generation Alerts this week, extending through June 26, due to an intense heat wave across its footprint. These alerts mean all available generators might need to run at full capacity to meet soaring electricity demand, which is actually higher than PJM’s initial summer peak forecasts. This situation puts a lot of pressure on the grid and directly impacts linemen, as maintenance is deferred and demand response programs are activated to keep power flowing. It highlights how crucial linemen’s readiness and adaptability are in ensuring grid reliability during extreme weather.
